What To Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal

Do you have problem spots with unwanted hair?  Is constant shaving leaving your skin itchy and irritated?  Laser hair removal might be for you.  At Beverly Hills Skin Care Institute in Beverly Hills, MI,  Dr. Indira Misra-Higgins and her team specialize in dermatological and aesthetic skincare and are here to guide your journey to smooth, hair-free skin.

How Does It Work?

Laser hair removal utilizes concentrated laser beams to target and effectively damage the hair follicle.  Once the follicle is damaged, hair growth begins to slow and, in some cases, completely stop.  Most patients require multiple treatment sessions to see results.  However, the effectiveness can be different based on the color of your hair.  Darker hair tends to see better results than lighter hair due to the amount of pigment in the follicle.

How To Prepare?

At your initial consultation, Dr. Misra-Higgins will go over your medical history and any current medications you are on.  She will discuss your areas of concern and advise you based on your skin and hair type for the treatment plan.

There are a few things you should do before your appointment to prepare:

  • Shave the area that will be getting lasered.
  • Refrain from using lotion or other topicals.
  • Do not tan before your appointment.

How Long Does It Last?

After your initial set of treatments, results can last up to a few months.  Most patients need between two and six treatments with some sites requiring more sessions. Maintenance treatments should be scheduled periodically to ensure effectiveness.  Rest assured, the team at Beverly Hills Skin Institute will create a personalized plan for your laser hair removal.

What You Can Expect

During the laser hair removal process, you will be given protective eyewear to shield yourself against the laser light.  The doctor will press a handheld tool on your skin in the area being treated, and you will see bright flashes of light against the skin.  The doctor may apply a cooling gel to reduce any mild discomfort that is felt by the laser. However, there typically is very little.  Once the procedure is finished, you may notice some redness, swelling, or tenderness at the application site, which should decrease within a few hours.

The team at Beverly Hills Skin Institute in Beverly Hills, MI is prepared to educate and guide you in the process of laser hair removal.  Visit our website for further information or call (248) 723-5802 to schedule your consultation with Dr. Indira Misra-Higgins today.
